Pentecost, The Descent of the Holy Spirit:

In the Old Testament, Pentecost was the feast which occurred fifty days after Passover. As the Passover feast celebrated the exodus of the Israelites from the slavery of Egypt, so Pentecost celebrated God's gift of the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai.

In the new covenant of the Messiah, the passover event takes on its new meaning as the celebration of Christ's death and resurrection, the "exodus" of men from this sinful world to the Kingdom of God. And in the New Testament as well, the Pentecostal feast is fulfilled and made new by the coming of the "new law," the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Disciples of Christ.

When the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed as resting upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit ... (Acts 2:1-4).

The Holy Spirit that Christ had promised to his disciples came on the day of Pentecost (Jn 14:26, 15:26; Lk 24:49; Acts 1:5). The apostles received "the power from on high," and they began to preach and bear witness to Jesus as the risen Christ, the King and the Lord. This moment has traditionally been called the birthday of the Church.

Historical Overview:

Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The parish's founding organizational meeting was held on February 10, 1921 at which time an organizational committee was formed with George Supyniuk as Chair. The first Liturgy of the newly formed parish was celebrated in an Anglican Church on Sunday, March 9, 1924 by visiting Rev. Fr. S. Hrebeniuk. On that day the name of the congregation was also chosen and marks the official commencement of the parish.

On March 12, 1925, the parish purchased a Lutheran church at 1825 Winnipeg Street for its place of worship. Later that year it was decided to build a new church to accommodate the rapidly growing membership. That same year Rev Fr. Kirstiuk was appointed to serve the parish on a regular basis.

Construction of the new church started in 1925 and was completed in 1928. The interior of the church was not completed until 1947 at which time the iconostsas was installed. The delay between the commencement and completion of the church was due to the difficult economic circumstances of the period.

Following World War II the parish once again experienced a period of significant growth and there was an apparent need for a larger church. A building committee was established in 1954 with Metro Kereluke as Chair. Construction of the new Church (at the present site of Toronto St. and 12th Ave.) started in May 1960 and was sufficiently completed to celebrate a Liturgy on October 2, 1960. Officiating the service were Fr. S. Sawchuk and Fr. S. Kiciuk. Regular services in the new church started on Christmas Eve, Jan 6, 1961. The iconostas was constructed by Mr. Denesenko and installed in November 1967.

Since then the parish has undertaken a number of major construction projects and services. For example the Ukrainian Orthodox Auditorium was completed in 1981, a set of 10 icons were installed in the sanctuary in 1988 and a seniors complex, Selo Gardens was completed in 1991 and an elevator was installed in 2003. Currently a church beautification (addition of icons in the nave of the church) is being completed. In about the same period the parish replaced its transportable kitchen booth with a much larger and new facility. In addition to these construction projects, the parish has made on a regular basis significant donations to a large number of charities. The parish has an extensive Library of Orthodoxy.

The parish continues to enjoy the support of the following lay organizations, Ukrainian Women's Association, the Ukrainian Orthodox Men's Association and the Ukrainian Society of Prosvita.

The parish currently provides outreach services to Weyburn and regular services at Myrrh Bearing Women chapel in Selo Gardens.

Programming in the Parish is extensive and includes: Sunday School, Altar Servers (Acolyte) Group, Summer Day Camp for Youth, Pizza with the Priest, Adult and Youth Education, English Mission, Retreat Weekends for Adults.

Extended Community Services Supported include: Sadochuk Ukrainian Bi-Lingual Pre-school, Thomson School Lunch Program.
